Passiflora laurifolia, commonly known as the water lemon, Jamaican honeysuckle, golden bellapple, pomme liane on Martinique & Guadeloupe and orange lilikoi (yellow lilikoi, or simply lilikoi, is the name given to passiflora edulis v. flavicarpa for the valley where it first grew in Hawai’i), is a species in the family Passifloraceae. It is native to tropical Americas. The water lemon is an invasive plant in its home region, and has spread to other parts of the world. As a tropical species, water lemon will not tolerate any frost. Water lemon is only occasionally cultivated, but the fruits are usually available in markets wherever the vine grows in wild. It is not yet widely known outside those regions.
The fruit is medium-sized, ovoid in shape, about 2 in (5.1 cm) long with a diameter of 3 in (7.6 cm),[1] with a green or deep orange skin and white-yellow, extremely juicy pulp.
The water lemon has an excellent mild, perfumed taste, without the tartness of the common Passionfruit. It grows on a vigorous vine up to 30 feet long. Growing better in slightly humid climates, the vine is not particular about soil or water requirements, other than liking ground moisture year-round. It is almost always grown from seeds, but can be propagated by cuttings. Bottom-heating the seeds at 70-80 °F (21-27 °C) can result in germination at 1–2 weeks; at lower temperatures, seeds can take up to 10 weeks to germinate. The fruits are eaten fresh, or used in drinks and beverages.
Waterlemon Cay in the Virgin Islands is named after the fruit.
لیمو آب گیاهی از خانواده ی گل ساعتی می باشد که شاخه های آن تا حدود 10 متر یا بیشتر رشد می کنند و کم و بیش چوبی یا انعطاف پذیر هستند. برگ ها دارای آرایش متناوب، دوکی – تخم مرغی یا بیضی شکل، در ابتدا گرد، به طول 15 تا 20 سانتیمتر و عرض 3 تا 8 سانتیمتر، ضخیم و چرمی می باشد. گل ها معطر، منفرد، دارای پنج گلبرگ، به عرض 7 تا 10 سانتیمتر و دارای کالیکس زنگوله ای شکل است. گلبرگ ها و کاسبرگ ها به رنگ قرمز یا قرمز مایل به ارغوانی است. این گل ها فقط در بعدازظهرها باز می شوند و ظاهراً خودگرده افشان نمی باشند. برای تولید محصول خوب، انجام دگرگرده افشانی در این گیاهان ضروری است. اگر زنبورهای عسل کارگر در زمان شکوفا شدن گل ها وجود نداشته باشند، گرده افشانی باید توسط دست صورت گیرد. میوه ها بیضی شکل یا تخم مرغی شکل، به طول 5 تا 8 سانتیمتر و عرض 4 تا 6 سانتیمتر، به رنگ زرد مایل به نارنجی است. این میوه ها توسط سه براکته ی بزرگ، سبز رنگ و برگ مانند پوشیده شده اند. پوست میوه ها چرمی، به ضخامت 3 میلیمتر بوده که قسمت داخلی آن سفید رنگ و اسفنجی است که در صورت خشک شدن، سفت می شود. این میوه ها دارای پالپی مطبوع، آبدار، موسیلاژی و نیمه اسیدی است.
