Nypa fruticans, commonly known as the nipa palm or mangrove palm, is a species of palm native to the coastlines and estuarine habitats of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The flowers are a globular inflorescence of female flowers at the tip with catkin-like red or yellow male flowers on the lower branches. The flower produces woody nuts arranged in a globular cluster up to 25 cm (10 in) across on a single stalk. The ripe nuts separate from the ball and float away on the tide, occasionally germinating while still water-borne.
It grows best in temperature within the range 23 – 27°c, but can tolerate 20 – 35°c. Grows best in a sunny position. Prefers a pH in the range 6.5 – 7.5, tolerating 5.5 – 8.5. Nipa palm is probably the oldest palm species, with evidence to show that it had a pantropical distribution 13 – 63 million years ago. It is considered an advanced palm species, and it has been suggested that it could be related to two genera in the Pandanaceae, Pandanus and Sararanga. The first flowering occurs 3 – 4 years after seed germination.
نخل نیپا گونه ای کمیاب از نخل بومی جنوب شرق آسیا است که برخلاف تمام نخل های دیگر، قابلیت کاشت در زمین های همیشه مرطوب و حتی کاشت در آب (مانند گیاه برنج یا نیلوفر آبی) را نیز دارد
میوه های این نخل در حالت نارس خوراکی هستند ولی وقتی کاملا رسیده شوند چوبی و الیافی میشوند
مردم محلی استوایی از تمام قسمت های این گیاه شامل برگ ، میوه ، شیره شیرین گیاه، استفاده میکنند
به نظر میرسد قدیمی ترین گونه نخل در دنیا نخل نیپا باشد چون فسیل هایی از این گیاه مربوط به 63 میلیون سال پیش کشف شده است
این در حالی است که اولین گیاهان گلدار حدود 130 میلیون سال پیش ظهور کرده اند و بسیاری از گیاهان امروزی در آن روزگار وجود نداشته اند
معمولا گیاهانی که این همه قدمت دارند نسبت به انواع شرایط بد آب و هوایی در طول سالیان زیاد مقاوم شده اند
بذر نخل نیپا برای اولین بار در ایران توسط بانک بذر جنوب وارد و عرضه میشود
