Bassia scoparia is a large annual herb in the family Amaranthaceae (sensu lato) native to Eurasia. It has been introduced to many parts of North America, where it is found in grassland, prairie, and desert shrub ecosystems. This plant is grown as an ornamental for its red fall foliage. It has also been useful in erosion control on denuded soils. It has been suggested as an agent of phytoremediation, because it is a hyperaccumulator of chromium, lead, mercury, selenium, silver, zinc, and uranium. B. scoparia contains higher levels of protein and oxalate than most grasses and fodder plants, thus it also serves as a good forage crop for livestock. When grown as ornamental plant, it is a good choice as evergreen foliage plant for landscapes
In Japan the seeds are used a food garnish called tonburi (とんぶり) (Japanese). Because its texture is similar to caviar, it has been called “land caviar”, “field caviar”, and “mountain caviar”. کوچیا گیاهی بوته ای از خانواده تاج خروسیان است در فصل پاییز برگ های آن به رنگ قرمز در می آید که به همین دلیل به آن بوته آتشین میگویند. ظاهر جذاب کوچیا باعث شده است که طرفداران زیادی داشته باشد. بذر بوته کوچیا در گلدان یا باغچه قابل کاشت است. توجه داشته باشید که کوچیا یک گیاه بیابانی است، برای همین مقاومت خوبی در برابر نور آفتاب و خاک ضعیف نشان می‌دهد.
بذر بوته آتشین کوچیا نیاز به آماده سازی خاصی ندارد. دانه‌ها را برای چند ساعت در آب بخیسانید تا پوسته آن کمی نرم شوند، بعد گلدان را از خاک معمولی پر کنید .بعد از کاشت خاک را با اسپری آب مرطوب نگه دارید تا زمانیکه جوانه‌ها از خاک بیرون بزنند.
بهترین زمان برای کاشت بذر این گیاه اوایل فصل بهار است. کوچیا به سرعت جوانه می‌زند و در زمان بسیار کمی به بلوغ می‌رسد. در فصل پاییز شاهد قرمز شدن رنگ برگ‌های کوچیا خواهید بود و قطعاً جلوه تازه‌ای به باغ یا باغچه شما می‌دهد. آبیاری این گیاه متوسط است، یعنی باید صبر کنید تا سطح خاک کاملاً خشک و استخوانی شود و بعد آبیاری کنید. کوچیا در برابر هوای گرم و سرد مقاوم است و حتی در خاک‌های ضعیف نیز به زندگی خود ادامه می‌دهد، پس از این نظر جای هیچ نگرانی نیست
