Vitex agnus-castus, also called vitex, chaste tree (or chastetree), chasteberry, Abraham’s balm, lilac chastetree, or monk’s pepper, is a native of the Mediterranean region. It is one of the few temperate-zone species of Vitex, which is on the whole a genus of tropical and sub-tropical flowering plants. Theophrastus mentioned the shrub several times, as agnos in Enquiry into Plants. It has been long believed to be an anaphrodisiac – leading to its name as chaste tree – but its effectiveness for such action remains unproven.
گیاه پنج انگشت معروف به فلفل بیابانی به شکل درختچه‌ای است و گل‌هایی به رنگ آبی یا زرد به شکل سنبله دارد که در اواخر تابستان ظاهر می‌شوند. میوه این گیاه بسیار کوچک در اندازه دانه فلفل سیاه، به شکل توت و قهوه‌ای رنگ است و بویی مانند بوی نعناع دارد. این گیاه بومی کشور‌های آسیای مرکزی است و در کشور ما نیز در نواحی مختلف تهران، البرز، کرج، قم، استان خراسان، خرمشهر، بندرعباس و برخی شهر‌های جنوبی یافت می‌شود. قسمت مورد استفاده این گیاه در طب سنتی میوه، برگ و گلهای آن است.
