Swietenia mahagoni, commonly known as American mahogany, Cuban mahogany, small-leaved mahogany, and West Indian mahogany, is a species of Swietenia native to South Florida in the United States and islands in the Caribbean including the Bahamas, Cuba, Barbados, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is the species from which the original mahogany wood was produced.
Swietenia mahagoni is listed as “Threatened” in the Preservation of Native Flora of Florida Act. It is the national tree of the Dominican Republic.
Mahogany’s first major use in Spain and England was for ship building, and during the 18th century it was the chief wood employed in Europe for that purpose
The wood from Swietenia mahagoni, is used to make modern musical instruments because of its superior tonewood qualities.

چوب قهوه ای رنگ آن بسیار پر کاربرد بوده و انواع و اقسام وسایل مختلف از چوب آن ساخته میشود
تا جایی که در حال حاضر بخاطر برداشت بی رویه این گیاه تحت خطر است و اکثر درخت های ماهون وحشی در طبیعت برداشت شده اند و بیشتر به صورت کاشته توسط بشر موجود است و در طبیعت تعداد کمی از آن باقی مانده است
